Message from Coach Cekutis Concerning the New Guardian Caps.
1 Oct by Peter Cekutis
Good evening,
I wanted to take a moment to provide some information about the new Guardian Caps our program has purchased. We are excited to make these part of our ongoing commitment to player safety.
Over the last two years, our staff has had in-depth conversations about the use of Guardian Caps with administrators and other programs. In the past, we chose to focus our resources on purchasing the very best helmets available. Two years ago, we outfitted every youth player with top-of-the-line Flex helmets and brand-new shoulder pads. At the varsity level, we purchased Vicis 02 and Vicis Trench helmets—widely regarded as the number one helmets by NFL players and the Virginia Tech Impact Study. This year, we will again invest in high-quality helmets to replace aging equipment.
That said, Guardian Caps do not detract from performance. They are lightweight, comfortable, and supported by strong data. In the last year, both the NFL and Division I college programs have mandated their use at practices, with some even allowing them in games. Building on this momentum, and in response to community support, we decided to pilot their use this season with our middle school program and selected varsity players.
This initiative has moved quickly because we are always looking for ways to enhance our safety standards and respond to parent and community concerns. Please know that we do everything possible to provide our players with the very best in protective equipment. It’s also important to note that while many programs use Guardian Caps as a substitute for updating helmets or pads, Cape Football has invested heavily in keeping our equipment among the best available—something we will continue to prioritize.
OUR POLICY REGARDING THE USE OF GUARDIAN CAPS:
Starting the week of October 6th, Guardian Caps will be mandatory practice equipment for all players in the middle school program.
Players who wish to wear the caps during games—or whose parents request it—will be allowed to do so.
Any player who has sustained a concussion this year, or within the past year, will be required to wear the caps during games.
At the end of the season, the coaching staffs for the youth, middle school, and high school programs will meet to discuss the expanded use of the caps across all levels.
If you have any questions or concerns about your son wearing the Guardian Caps, please reach out directly to Coach Cekutis.
If you would like your son to begin wearing the caps in games this week, please notify Coach Weare so that we can ensure consistency and communication
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we will make Cape Football the safest and most successful program in the state.
